1.2. 2026 Upgrade to Evergreen 3.17.3

Last Updated 09/08/2026

NC Cardinal Evergreen Fall Upgrade

December 5, 2026

Current Version: 3.15.5

Target Version: 3.17.3

Over the course of the night of Saturday, December 5th, NC Cardinal will be having our annual Evergreen software upgrade.  During this time, our Evergreen catalog will be completely offline.

During this process, any libraries that are open will need to use the Offline mode.  Detailed instructions, including a video on Offline Mode, can be found in our Knowledge Books.

During the upgrade, users will still be able to authenticate to electronic resources, because we will be pointing our SIP authentication server at a backup copy of our database, but since our real database will be down, this means self check out machines should not be used during this time.

We will be upgrading from Evergreen version 3.15.5 to version 3.17.3.  The full list of changes can be found in the release notes below.

Progress on Community Reported Issues

Below you will find a table listing issues that have been reported by various library staff from across the NC Cardinal consortium who have been testing the various features and functions of the upgrade in the Next environment.  Included are links to the original Basecamp posts that reported these issues.  You can follow these discussions in the Evergreen Upgrade Testing Basecamp group here.

(Note:  If you are unable to access these Basecamp links because you are not part of the Evergreen Upgrade Testing Basecamp group, you may submit a request to be added here under the "Mailing List" section.)

If you are interested in testing the upgrade for yourself in the Next environment, click here for instructions on how to access your library's version of the Next database.

Category Status Description Notes Basecamp Bug Report
Circs and Holds Fixed The top highlighted row in the patron information sidebar of the patron account bleeds out of both sides of the grid.   Post
Circs and Holds Resolved The Notes tab on patron accounts is greyed out and I get the "can't click here" cursor, but can still open the Notes tab. Resolved by clearing cache and hard reloading. Post
KPAC Fixed Format icons are unreasonably large.   Post
KPAC Fixed In cases where there should be two format icons, there's only one. (Wonderbooks, Blu-ray/DVD combo packs)   Post 2164897
KPAC Fixed How is age group (Preschool, Primary School, Tween) determined when we only use "Juvenile" in the fixed fields in MARC records? The other options are apparently basically useless since we only use 'j' in the 'Audn' fixed field. Llewellyn has gone in and changed the settings so now the only options listed are "All Age Groups" and "Juvenile." Post
OPAC External issue Large covers (which are what the search results use) are not loading, but medium-sized covers (which the record pages use) are. Due to an issue with Open Library. Post
Register Patron Unable to replicate When creating a library card, none of the permission groups are being accepted. When Adult is selected from the list, the field remains yellow in color, and Evergreen says information still needs to be filled out when trying to save.   Post

Circs and Holds   If you click the "Circulation" dropdown menu in the staff catalog while on a non-angularized page, it will say "Pull List for Hold Requests," but if you click on the dropdown menu while on an angularized page, it will say "Holds Pull List."   Post
KPAC   Cover images are not showing up in search results or individual records.   Post
Load Times   It seems to be taking a long time for the new version to load patron items checked out, items on hold, and to refresh these items after any action is taken on the patron checkout screen.   Post
Load Times   Long load times also for pulling up the item details screen from Item Status and loading the Holdings Editor screen.   Post
