Home → Cataloging in NC Cardinal → Appendices → Appendix J: Search and Icon Formats
Last Updated 08/28/2024
The table below shows all the search and icon formats. In some cases they vary slightly, with the icon format being more restrictive. This is so that things such as a search for "All Books" will include Large Print books yet Large Print books will not show both a "Book" and "Large Print Book" icon.
In the table below "Icon Format Only" portions of the definition are italicized and in square brackets: [Icon format only data]
Examples of the fields involved include the necessary code in bold. (Note that when counting the positions of the codes, the count begins at 0, not 1.)
The definitions use the Fixed Field Types at the end of this document.

In most instances, the easiest way to add or correct an icon format is to use the Enhanced MARC Editor. This way you can change the fixed fields that determine the icon format without having to count out the number of spaces in the LDR, =006, =007, or =008 fields in the MARC record, as you would in the Flat Text Editor.
As a comparison, here is what you might see in the Enhanced MARC Editor for a large print book versus what you would see in the Flat Text Editor:
In the above example, the key field is Form. The letter "d" in the field designates the record as Large Print and supplies the appropriate icon format:
If this record did not have the "d" in the Form field, the icon format would be for a regular print book, which is determined by the letters "a" in the Type field and "m" in the BLvl field:
So if you come across a record for a large print book that has a regular print book icon format, you will want to make sure to add the letter "d" to the Form field. Likewise, if you come across a record for a regular print book that has a large print book icon format, you will want to delete the "d" from the Form field.
In some instances, however, like with a DVD or Blu-Ray, it is actually easier to simply copy and paste the example =007 field listed in the definitions above.
So for example, if you have a record for a DVD that does not have a format icon, you could copy the =007 vd\cvaizq from the DVD Search and Icon Format definition above and paste it into the MARC record for the DVD using the Flat Text Editor screen.
In the following example, you will see a MARC record for a DVD that is missing the necessary =007 field:
Thus there is no icon format:
To fix this, copy and paste the =007 vd\cvaizq into the MARC record in the Flat Text Editor and save the record:
Now you will see the icon format for DVD:
